Moment to Mo(nu)ment
SISU group exhibition at National Film Archive in Tallinn, Estonia
“The Archive of Handshakes” and “The Agreement Protocol,” two works juxtaposed within or as a single artifact, prompt questions about how we document and assign meaning to transient moments. Such ephemeral, hard to catch moments contrast with a permanent fixture of architecture, that not only hosts them, but is defined by them.
As an isolated artifact from “The Archive of Handshakes” series, this sculpture captures the ephemeral act of a handshake in a permanent medium. The air trapped between the two hands is encased in clay, celebrating a fleeting moment of connection, touch and interaction. This piece serves as a tangible token of a singular moment, one of many that collectively define relationships and our personal narratives. Ultimately, it stands as a poignant reminder of how the social ritual of a handshake may eventually be forgotten.
In “The Protocol of Agreements,” handshakes represent the ‘building blocks’ of space. Each sentence captures a moment where a handshake signifies a seemingly simple act of agreement – yet, in fact, a far more complex agreement based on and backed by contracts, policies and laws, highlighting their role in the permanence of architectural structures. These commonplace, mundane handshakes initiate a ripple effect that shapes socio-political processes, communities, and landscapes.Within the architectural context, the far-reaching consequences of these agreements evidently define our immediate surroundings and shape our anthropocentric future.
